Deathfledge looked about his room. Ok, walnut paneling, deeply veneered with a rich redwood laquer, with beech spacers and top rail running around the edges. A double wardrobe and tall boy in the same wood, the tall boy just to the right of the door as you enter, the wardrobe in the centre of the adjoining wall.
A seven by six bed base in wrought Iron, dipped in gold with scrolling down the four posts, a relief of a rolling wave at the foot board, the crest accented with copper flake while the body of the wave is sprayed with antique bronze enamel paint, the back drop in pale blue enamel. the head board to be cast with the faces of the four winds blowing. Mattress eight inches thick, sprung and filled with duck feathers. sheets and pillow cases in black silk while the goose down duvet covered with black satin, a midnight blue wave of stitching, running through it at equal distances apart.
At either side of the bed, a small cabinet with oil lamps, Tapers placed inside the glass instead of the wick. The cabinets made of walnut, dressed to match the Tall boy and wardrobe. In the four corners of the room, a Queen Anne chair each covered in cream satin, the arm rests finished with a creme velvet padding. Heavy black velvet drapes covering the windows and Black laquered interior window shutters made from Oak. For decoration, a single large oil painting depicting his previous Ship, A Spanish Man 'o' War, turning into a rough swell, heeled over in the wind, the Keel just visible towards the stern, , with fog starting to drift into the fore front, thick rolling fog as the backdrop. Oak flooring covered in a clear laquer to bring out the grain, and that’s about it.

Deathfledge rubbed his hands together, rolled up his sleeves and set about the room, measuring and mumbling to himself quite merrily. Lost in his own thoughts.

It took a few hours, but with preperations complete, he concentrated for a minute, and a tap at the window was the reply.
crossing to the window, there was a Marsh harrier and as deathfledge opened the window it hopped onto the sill. deathfledge gave the bird a fond look. "hello, li'l lady, i need these supplies, see that they're delivered to the house my dear. " He tied a small roll of paper delicately to its leg. The harrier let a small cry out, cocked its head, nodded and jumped out onto the ledge before leaqping and spreading its small wings. as it flew into the distance he remarked to no one in particular, "she's a good girl but a bit flighty" he then chuckled and went out the room.

Deathfledge opened the door and started bringing in the battening and panels for the walls. determined nothing would distract him. to help him he'd enlisted his childre. The twins cut and awed the battens, the fledgling fixed them to the walls and deathfledge carefully arranged the paneling, beading and dado atop the paneling. Next came the oak flooring, pretty straightforward for three seamen., having to change deck boards is a similar task and the flooring took half an hour.

Satisfied, he opened the window and the twins flew out. one a marsh harrier, the other a kestrel. the fledgling stayed behind to await further duties,so deathfledge told him what to buy in the way of furnishings and sent him on his way. A golden eagle could be seen flying out deathfledges window.

Opening the door to his room with with one hand, deathfledge carried in the Tallboy on his left shoulder, balancing it and holding it steady with his left. H knelt and carefully placed it on the floor to the right of the door he'd just entered. Adjusting it til he was satisfied with the position,he untied the drawers, opening the top left to take out a mother of pearl vanity case. This he placed in the centre of the Tallboy, opening it up inspect its contents. nodding to himself in satisfaction, he then disappeared out the door only to return a couple of minutes later with the wardrobe.
This he had in both hands, the foot of the wardrobe against his body, hisarms at full reach with the furniture jutting out. It just fit through the door, ans crossing the room, deathfledge bent and lowered the wardrobe to the floor. Stepping back and straightening, he left it there for the moment whilst moving toward the window, opening it slightly, letting the night breeze swirl about the room.
sitting on the sill, he reached into his right shirt sleeve and pulled out a small black leather pouch. Opening the pouch he dipped three fingers inside and withdrew some tobacco which he shook into his hand. Closing two fingers aroound the tobacco, he reached into the pouch again to retrieve a sliver of paper. lfting the pouch to his mouth he bit down on the drawstring, pulling the pouch away from him, closing it.
Leaving the pouch dangling from his mouth and with the paper securely held between fore and middle finger, he opened his hand and shook the tobacco gently til it bunched into the centre of his hand. taking the paper in his other hand he straightened it before manipulating a trough, then placed the tobacco on the paper and spread it evenly along its length. Satisfied that it was even, he then rolled the paper into a tube, licking the paper along its length just before he finished so as yo seal the paper against itself. this completed he withdrew the pouch from his mouth and returned it to its resting place. Withdrawing his hand, a match had appeared. presumably from the same place as his pouch went.
deathfledge struck the match on the buckle of his belt and lit his cigarette, inhaling deeply while loking out the window, exhaling the smoke he smiled to himself. Great View, nice room, good people, whats not to like? taking another hit, he chuckled to himself, felt almost like coming home.

He sat there, looking out the window, daydreaming, til his cigarette reminded him it was time to carry on. It did this by burning his fingers. Instead of yelping in pain, deathfledge just looked at it and took a final puff on it before stubbing it out on his calloused hand and rubbing the remains in his fingers til it was so much dust then he placed it in his pocket til he could find his ashtray. No sense in littering the place up he thought.
Two trips outside and back again, and the Queen Anne chairs were in place. Three more trips after that and the bed parts were brought up and ready to be assembled. The Smiths, Panel beaters and Enamlers had done a wonderful job with the bed, pity they had died, their craft had been the best in the land !00 years ago when the bed was first commissioned, oh well.
After 2 hrs, the bed was complete and ready to be made, the mattress new and specially designed by the twins, who could turn their hands to almost anything as long as there was no iron involved. Instead of conventional springs, they'd made air pockets, double layered and stacked on top of each other, squeezed tight, cotton swaddling placed over and under them and triple stitched all round to keep their shape. Testing the Matress deathfledge was again in awe of their ingenuity. He shook his head, wondering not for the first time why they'd approached him to be turned in the first place. it wasn't as if they needed it. oh well, some other time for that thought.

Leaving the bed, deathfledge left the room to collect his personal posessions, the lamps, All that was left of his first command, his seachest, which held his good shirts and bed linen. his canvas duffel, which held all the reat of his posessions, and finally, the large painting, which he placed beside the Tall Boy, the painting itself facing the wall. Crossing to the wardrobe he opened it, placing his duffel bag inside. As he closed the doors, the walnut patterning reminded him of a pair of demonic faces. Walnut always had that effect on him, which is why he liked the wood so much. The sea chest he placed at the foot of the bed seating it squarely in the middle. before placing the lamps on the little bedside tables either side of the bed.
Eyeing the lock on the chest, which seemed to have no key hole or padlock, he drew out his cutlass from its sheath, listening to its whispering hiss, almost silent, like a final breath. The steel was shiny, liquid almost, like mercury, and he deliberately nicked his right thumb along the keen edge, the blood ran down the edge for a second getting thinner and thinner before disappearing. There was no spillage or drop of blood on the floor or anywhere else on the blade. just its shimmering reflected light oon the steel. Satisfied, he carefully reversed the cutlass so that its broad end was held in both hands and gently placed the albatross motif embossed on the pommel to the face of the lock.

With an audible click, the lock sprung open, revealing the contents inside. Sheathing his cutlass and taking off his belt, he reached into the trunk, taking out his linen for the bed. He closed the lid swiftly, snapping the lock back into place and placed his belt and sword atop the trunk, then proceeded to make his bed.

The Last thing to do was to hang the painting. Taking great care, he sited the painting over the tall boy. stepping back to see if it was straight, he noticed the fog swirling across the front of the picture, nearly obscurring the stern of the ship. Sighing, he wondered how long he had left. Still, now he had another place to stay. no more inns and taverns.
